Patients with a sensitive gag reflex may find bitewing or periapical X-rays difficult because an image sensor must be positioned inside the mouth. With panoramic imaging, the X-ray detector remains outside the mouth while the machine rotates around the head.

External Image Capture

The panoramic detector and X-ray source move around the outside of the head. A small positioning guide may be placed between the front teeth to help align the jaws, but no large image sensor is positioned against the back teeth, gums, or palate.

A Simple, Guided Process

Patients generally stand or sit with their chin and head supported while the dental team carefully aligns the unit. They remain still as the rotating arm moves around the head, usually for approximately 12 to 20 seconds.
