Which Program Applies to You?
In British Columbia, Indigenous dental benefits may be administered through different programs depending on your eligibility and place of residence.

Who Is Eligible?
Eligibility depends on which program applies to you.
- FNHA Health Benefits is available to First Nations people with Indian status who live in British Columbia. It is also available to infants up to 24 months old when at least one parent is eligible for the program.
- Federal NIHB eligibility generally includes First Nations people registered under the Indian Act, Inuit recognized by an Inuit land claim organization, and children under two whose parent is an NIHB-eligible client. In BC, eligible Inuit continue to receive NIHB coverage, while eligible First Nations residents generally access dental benefits through FNHA.
Bring your applicable status or client identification information to your appointment so our team can help identify the coverage relevant to your care.

What Dental Services Are Covered?
FNHA and NIHB provide dental benefits for a range of eligible services, although their coverage criteria, limits, and approval requirements differ. Depending on the program and your individual coverage, eligible services may include:

Exams & Preventive Care
Eligible services may include dental examinations, scaling, polishing, fluoride treatments, and sealants, subject to the applicable program requirements.

Dental X-Rays
Eligible diagnostic radiographs may be covered according to the applicable program’s benefit criteria and frequency guidelines.

Fillings & Crowns
Eligible restorative services may include fillings and certain crowns when applicable program requirements are met.

Extractions
Eligible dental surgery services may include simple and surgical extractions, subject to the applicable program requirements.

Root Canal Treatment
Eligible root canal treatments and related endodontic services may be covered according to the applicable program’s criteria.

Dentures
Eligible complete and partial dentures and certain related services may be covered, subject to applicable requirements and frequency guidelines.

Gum Therapy
Eligible periodontal services may include treatments such as scaling and root planing, subject to the applicable program’s benefit rules.
Coverage requirements vary by program and service. Some treatments may require prior approval or predetermination, and clinical notes, X-rays, treatment plans, or other supporting information may be required. Frequency limits and other benefit rules may also apply.
Dental implants and cosmetic treatments are excluded under both FNHA and NIHB dental benefits. Other exclusions and coverage criteria differ between the programs, so the applicable FNHA or NIHB benefit information should be checked for your individual treatment.
How NIHB Predetermination Works?
Some eligible dental services can be provided and billed without predetermination. Others require NIHB to review the proposed treatment before coverage is confirmed.
Book Your Dental Exam
We assess your oral health and recommend treatment based on your clinical needs.
Review Your NIHB Coverage
Our team checks the applicable NIHB benefit requirements and identifies whether the proposed treatment requires predetermination.
We Submit the Request
When predetermination is required, our team submits the request and required supporting records on your behalf.
Review Your Coverage and Estimate
Once NIHB has reviewed the request, we explain the coverage decision and provide a written estimate of any known amount you would be responsible for before planned treatment begins.
What Will You Pay?
What you pay depends on the program that applies to you, the treatment recommended, and the applicable coverage requirements.
For NIHB patients, Yaletown Dental Boutique direct-bills eligible covered dental services. NIHB clients do not have deductibles or co-payments under the program for eligible covered benefits. However, an amount may remain your responsibility if a service is excluded, exceeds an applicable frequency limit, or does not meet the program’s coverage criteria.
FNHA dental benefits are administered through Pacific Blue Cross. Coverage and any amount you may need to pay depend on your benefits and the treatment provided. Our team can help you understand the coverage information relevant to your recommended care.
For treatment that is not covered by your dental benefits, Yaletown Dental Boutique also offers third-party financing through iFinance.

Important Information for
CDCP Patients
Treatment under the Canadian Dental Care Plan is not fully covered. A co-payment will apply.

What About Invisalign® and Cosmetic Treatment?
Cosmetic treatments are excluded under both FNHA and NIHB dental benefits. Dental implants are also excluded under both programs.
Orthodontic treatment is different. Both programs provide orthodontic benefits subject to eligibility and clinical requirements. NIHB orthodontic coverage is subject to specific clinical eligibility criteria and requires predetermination. FNHA orthodontic benefits are also subject to age restrictions and clinical criteria.
If you are interested in Invisalign®, our team can assess your teeth and bite and discuss your treatment options. Invisalign® coverage should not be assumed; whether orthodontic treatment qualifies for benefits depends on the applicable program and your individual case.
For treatment not covered by your dental benefits, third-party financing through iFinance may be available.

Important Coverage Information
FNHA and Pacific Blue Cross determine applicable FNHA dental benefits and coverage requirements. Indigenous Services Canada determines NIHB eligibility, covered benefits, frequency limits, exclusions, predetermination requirements, and coverage decisions. Yaletown Dental Boutique cannot guarantee that a particular treatment will be covered. Program policies can change, so current FNHA, Pacific Blue Cross, and Indigenous Services Canada information remains the authority.
